Guide to Adult Teeth Straightening

Teeth Straightening Dubuque, IA

When metal braces were the only options, many adults put off getting teeth straightening treatments simply because they did not want deal with a metal contraption in their mouths. While braces are the most effective way to straighten teeth, the patient's smile is compromised during their treatment. Braces also make people more vulnerable to tooth decay and gum disease.

Teeth straightening options to consider

Straightening a person's teeth often involves them wearing a dental appliance for a fixed length of time. These devices work by pushing the person's teeth constantly, moving them into a better alignment. In some cases, other dental treatments like extractions might be performed to create more space in the patient's jaw.

Teeth alignment problems

Alignment problems that require straightening treatments include:

  • Gaps between teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Overbites
  • Overjets
  • Underbites
  • Crossbites

Dentists have several appliances that can be used to straighten teeth. Braces are generally viewed as the most effective option since they can be used to fix issues caused by abnormal jaw positioning. Other options like clear aligners are more discreet so patients can get the treatments they need without compromising their appearance or having to deal with people staring at their teeth:

Metal braces: These are the oldest way to straighten teeth are they are still commonly used. They are made up of metal brackets that are cemented to the front of the patient's teeth. These brackets are connected with wires that cause the brackets to push down on the wearer's teeth when tightened. Metal braces are permanently fixed in place after their installation and they stay in until the patient's treatment is over. Having them on teeth can get in the way of oral hygiene and meals

Clear aligners: These are made from clear plastics that are hard to notice when worn. Each set of aligners pushes the patient's teeth to its maximum capability, which takes about two weeks, then it is replaced with another set that takes over from there and pushes the person's teeth closer to the desired position. Clear aligners are removable devices so they can be taken out for meals or oral hygiene. Dentists recommend wearing clear aligners for at least 20 hours each day for the treatment to be effective

Lingual braces: These are similar to traditional metal braces, but instead of the brackets being cemented to the front of the patient's teeth, they are cemented to the back of the patient's teeth. It makes it harder for people the wearer interacts with to notice the appliance, but it also makes it less comfortable for the patient. It takes most people longer to adjust to life with lingual braces so these devices are rarely used to straighten teeth nowadays since they are more comfortable, discreet options
